Bhutan began using electricity to mine Bitcoin when the price was $5,000.
Bhutan supports Bitcoin BTC. The tiny Himalayan nation is now mining Bitcoin after it was discovered that it had been secretly acquiring cryptocurrency. Additionally, the nation of less than 800,000 people uses renewable energy to run its bitcoin mining operations.
Bhutan, renowned for its emphasis on "Gross National Happiness" and attractive scenery, has discovered ways to exploit its enormous hydroelectric potential, which makes up 30% of its gross domestic product.
Bhutanese officials verified that mining started while the price of Bitcoin was approximately $5,000 in April 2019. This information was first revealed in an exposé in local Bhutanese press, and it was then corroborated by queries from Forbes. Since then, the cost of a single Bitcoin has skyrocketed, currently costing around $28,000 per coin.
According to reports, the kingdom has looked at partnerships to increase the scope of its mining operations. Notably, it is attempting to obtain 100 megawatts of power for a Bitcoin mining data center in Bhutan by negotiating with the Nasdaq-listed mining business Bitdeer. Bitdeer's mining capacity would rise by around 12% as a result of this agreement.
With scant knowledge of the location, size, and profitability of its mining farms, the scope of Bhutan's mining operations remains a mystery. On their LinkedIn profiles, some Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) employees have listed "crypto mining" as one of their jobs and specialties.
Furthermore, it is unclear why the government decided not to inform its people or its allies abroad about this project. However, it is well known that the state-owned holding company DHI has invested millions of dollars on behalf of its citizens in cryptocurrency holdings.
Bitcoin mining is the cleanest industry in the world, despite what the media would have you believe given that more than half of its energy comes from clean or renewable sources. Michael Saylor, the chairman of MicroStrategy, and other proponents of bitcoin mining claim that "99.92% of carbon emissions in the world are due to industrial uses of energy other than bitcoin mining." Bhutan is a great location for Bitcoin mining because of the inexpensive, plentiful hydroelectric electricity, according to DHI.
Bhutan joins a long list of places that use hydropower, one of the least expensive sustainable energy sources, to mine bitcoin, from East Africa to Scandinavia.
