Galaxy buys the Dickens Bitcoin mining facility previously owned by Argo
Argo Blockchain developed "Helios," a 160-acre bitcoin mining operation, in Dickens County in May 2022. Argo would be $41 million in debt after a never-ending battle against declining bitcoin prices and rising energy expenses, but a $65 million purchase from Galaxy Digital before the end of the year would secure its future.
Vice President of Galaxy Digital Mike Wursthorn expressed his company's "extreme excitement" to be a part of this community. Being one of the biggest employers in Dickens County at this time, "we consider it as our duty to help further develop it and ensure that there is a long-term sustainable trajectory, not just for Helios, but for Dickens county itself."
A $35 million loan from Galaxy, secured by a set of Argo mining equipment as collateral, was also agreed upon as part of the deal.
Wursthorn stated, "We didn't just acquire a Bitcoin mining operation and Helios; we joined the community.
People can send and receive bitcoin, a digital currency, through the internet. It is not centralized in a government bank, unlike the U.S. dollar. A sophisticated global network of computers known as the blockchain is used to verify transactions.
According to Amanda Fabiano, head of mining at Galaxy Digital, "Bitcoin is a digital asset that enables users to transfer money without a middleman." We are heavily invested in the mining industry since there is no Bitcoin without Bitcoin mining.
Over 30 people are working there; all were kept by Galaxy from the original Argo crew.
Galaxy predicted that it will be successful in ways that Argo couldn't.
Galaxy is a comprehensive financial services company, therefore in addition to mining Bitcoin, we operate a number of other businesses, according to Fabiano. "With that, we think that we have a decent chance of building, growing, and expanding while still doing the right thing by the local community."
Over 50,000 servers are housed in the structure outside of Afton, Texas, and are kept cool by being submerged in a dielectric fluid. They all compete with other computers across the world to be the first to validate bitcoin transactions.
Galaxy intends to keep growing the "Helios" facility, which has a mining capacity of up to 180 megawatts.
There will be more construction, more design work, and more growth because "the site itself is not at its complete max capacity that it might potentially be out in the future," according to Fabiano. “I think it’s the future of money. We're just at the very beginning of how we'll use financial services in the future, so the more education we can provide, I believe, the better everyone will be.
Wursthorn asserted that Galaxy will carry on all community projects where Argo left off, including reopening the Spur city pool, which has been shuttered since 2009. The business will also develop regional educational initiatives to aid in the understanding of digital assets in the cryptocurrency market.
