US Senator Ted Cruz, who is bullish on Bitcoin, wants Texas to be a crypto oasis.
Senator Ted Cruz of the United States wants to turn the state of Texas into a haven for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The lawmaker expressed his understanding of how the cryptocurrency business may be vital for the US energy supply and technological advancement during a speech at the Texas Blockchain Summit 2022 in late November.
Cruz claimed that Bitcoin mining may be utilized to commercialize the energy produced by oil and gas production, highlighting that mining activity might be used as an alternative to traditional methods of energy storage and supply:
"The beauty of it Bitcoin mining is when you've got substantial investment, as we do in Texas and Bitcoin mining, when you have an extreme weather event, either extreme heat, which is frequent in the state of Texas or extreme cold, which sometimes happens here, Bitcoin mining can be shut off in a fraction of a second. Making that electricity immediately available to the grid to heat or cool people's homes, to keep businesses running. That is an enormous reservoir of excess capacity that, I think, is very beneficial."
The senator emphasized that Texas is an appealing location for the American cryptocurrency industry since it has abundant and relatively inexpensive electricity and supports free enterprise. Cruz also gave an explanation of why he considers himself an ardent supporter of Bitcoin:
"I like Bitcoin because the government can’t control it."
The Republican senator added that he buys Bitcoin, the lone cryptocurrency in his portfolio, on a weekly basis. He observed:
"Bitcoin, in my opinion, is an investment. It denotes a chance. It denotes success. It denotes financial freedom. I also believe that Texas' booming bitcoin mining industry is very advantageous for the grid's resilience."
One of the U.S.'s centers for cryptocurrency mining with the greatest growth is Texas. Its Comptroller's office took a pro-crypto stance in August and emphasized the advantages of the state hosting miners.
According to the Comptroller's office, bitcoin mining facilities do not put sustained energy demands on the grid, in contrast to "manufacturing facilities or industrial chemical plants, which can be expected to be around for decades."
